Planning Exterior Work
A few things worth considering before scheduling roofing, siding or gutter work.
Start With an Inspection
The condition of the roof surface, flashing, attic ventilation and drainage determines what work is actually needed. An assessment of all of them is a more reliable basis for a decision than a single visible symptom.
Consider the Whole System
Underlayment, waterproofing membrane, ventilation and flashing all contribute to how a roof performs, and none remain visible after installation. It is worth understanding what a proposal includes.
Compare Like With Like
Estimates for the same project can describe different materials and different scopes of work. Written detail on both makes it possible to compare proposals on equivalent terms.

Understanding Your Options
Knowing how roofing systems work makes it easier to compare recommendations and choose the approach that fits your home.
Repairs are generally appropriate when damage is isolated — a section of flashing, a pipe boot, or shingles lifted by wind in one area. Replacement is usually considered when wear is widespread, such as granule loss across multiple slopes, or when a roof is nearing the end of its expected service life. An inspection is what establishes which situation applies.
Water that passes the roof surface typically travels along the decking and framing before it reaches a point where it can drop through. As a result, interior staining often appears some distance from where the water actually entered. This is why locating the entry point requires examining the roof itself rather than working back from the stain.
Several factors beyond the shingle itself. Attic ventilation influences deck temperature in summer and ice formation at the eaves in winter. Underlayment and waterproofing membrane at eaves and valleys provide a secondary barrier if water passes the surface. Flashing at penetrations, valleys and roof-to-wall transitions is a common origin point for leaks. Installation quality across all of these affects service life as much as material grade.
For roofing we work with GAF, Owens Corning, IKO and Malarkey. For siding we install James Hardie, LP SmartSide, Mastic and Westlake Royal. Working with several manufacturers allows material recommendations to suit the specific home, exposure and budget.
